Boutique developer RBG Services has scooped up a major industry award for its $350 million Waterlea master-planned community at Walloon near Ipswich.

The group has won the 2018 National Award for Excellence in Strategic Planning for its innovative integrated stormwater design at Waterlea.

The national award, presented by Stormwater Australia at a gala evening on October 10, confirms RBG Services as a market leader in master-planned developments.

The ground-breaking Waterlea design, created in collaboration with engineering consultancy Premise and landscape designer and planner Tract Consultants, has been recognised for excellence in managing stormwater flows and for minimising environmental impact.

RBG Services development director Andrew Cook said he and his team were honoured to receive the national award after taking out the Queensland award in August.

“The waterway strategy we developed for Waterlea is the first of its kind, so we are pleased that the hard work our team has put into this project has been recognised by our industry peers,” Mr Cook said.

“Tract and Premise have worked tirelessly with us to ensure we are developing a system that is suited to the landscape, weather and natural surrounds, so it’s great to have the project’s innovation and achievements recognised.

“Usually an underground pipe conveys stormwater to an outlet point where a quality improvement device is installed, similar to that of a plant-filled sandpit, allowing the stormwater to filter through and remove pollutants.

“We’ve devised a solution to better convey stormwater and reduce the impact of flooding on residents and major roads by restoring the waterway to a pool and riffle natural stream system, promoting beneficial environmental outcomes for not only the site but the greater community.

“Our innovation aims to restore the waterway to reduce the detrimental environmental effects and create a beautiful natural space for Waterlea residents which will be a unique natural feature for the community and enhance the natural waterway.”

Waterlea has reached near sell-out on its first two stages and are set to fast-track its third stage due to the ever-growing demand for convenient and affordable lifestyle living with an emphasis on community.

Waterlea has completed more than 200 sales, and is already home to nearly 200 residents.

The emerging Waterlea community, located at Walloon in Ipswich’s western suburbs, is centred on a natural creek featuring a chain of ponds that provide natural open spaces for residents. When completed, Waterlea will comprise 13 neighbourhoods and a vibrant village centre by the water.

Waterlea is benefiting from more than $20 million being injected into regional trunk sewer and water upgrades in conjunction with Queensland Urban Utilities. APA Group has just completed major gas main installation to the Walloon region.

Substantial upgrades will also be made to the surrounding local road network and connecting motorway to Brisbane.

RBG Services is creating 34ha of new parkland and waterways for the Waterlea community along with plans for a market hall, café and childcare centre to service the village community.
